I am new

Will I fit in at Old First?

We strive to help you feel welcome! We are a diverse group of people who like to welcome everyone. We're progressive and traditional, young and aging, families and singles, straight, gay, lesbian, cis and trans, lifelong church-goers and new Christians exploring their faith, San Francisco natives and transplants.  We come together to celebrate God's love in community and share that love with our city and the world. Following worship on Sundays we have a coffee hour in our Fellowship Hall.  And to brag a bit -our coffee is really good and our baked goods are yummy!

Is Old First worship for me?

We hope so! We have fairly traditional reformed worship style, but with a modern understanding. We worship together every Sunday morning at 11am.  Liturgy and sermons are connected to our everyday modern lives and events in the world. Members always take part in the worship leadership.   Our beautiful sanctuary is bright and open with amazing stained glass, and is enhanced with ever-changing art. Music is important to us with a talented choir and a variety of classical and contemporary hymns and anthems and one of the city's best pipe organs. New choir members are always welcome. We strive to be intergenerational in all we do, so children are invited for a time just  with the pastor during worship,  We have a special space in the sanctuary filled with activities & crafts for kids. We hope you will be nourished and connected to God in our worship.

Can I help my community and world at Old First?

Most definitely, you can! To be engaged with our society is a prime value of our church. We serve the hungry and the outcast in our community. We are part of a group of Presbyterian Churches working to end structural racism in our country. We actively support refugees and others in need. We are involved with the SF Interfaith Council speaking to the needs and issues in our city. Our faith demands that we work for justice in the world. We try of live out the words of our St. Francis of Assisi for which our city is names "Preach the Gospel at all times, if necessary use words."

How can I get to Old First?

It's easy! We are in the heart of the city on Van Ness Avenue at the corner of Sacramento Street, one block north of the California Street cable car turn-around and one block south of the 49 Van Ness bus stops and the inbound 1 California bus stop. For those with cars, we have free validated parking on Sunday mornings and for special events in the Old First Parking Garage located beside the church at 1725 Sacramento Street. Make sure to get your ticket validated by an usher before you leave.  Free parking and good coffee, who could ask for more?
